Oakland has long been a sanctuary for Black culture and creative energy. This February, the city continues that legacy with a vibrant array of events that celebrate everything from historical archives to futuristic visions. Whether you are a resident of 1900 Broadway, a professional at STAK Space, or anyone looking to learn and grow in Oakland, there are countless ways to immerse yourself in the local commemorations of Black History Month. The town is alive with a spirit of reflection and progress, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the roots and the future of the community.
Imagining the Future: Afrofuturism at Chabot
The month kicks off with a focus on imagination at the Chabot Space & Science Center’s Afrofuturism event on February 6th. This all-ages gathering explores the intersection of Black history and speculative fiction, featuring contributions from AfroComicCon and local writers who are redefining Oakland’s “cosmic legacy” through art and technology. It is more than just science fiction; it is a movement that centers Black voices in the narrative of what is possible. Attendees can expect immersive installations and workshops that challenge traditional views of space and time, grounding cosmic exploration in the rich soil of African heritage.
Solidarity and Shared Histories
For those interested in the power of community solidarity, the Oakland Asian Cultural Center is hosting its 4th annual Lunar New Year x Black History Month celebration on February 7th. This event highlights the shared history of Asian and African American communities in the East Bay, showcasing how these two cultures have historically supported one another in the fight for equity. From the rhythmic precision of lion dancers and taiko drummers to a curated marketplace of local artisans, this celebration is a testament to the strength found in diversity. It provides a rare space to see how cross-cultural intersectionality continues to shape the social fabric of modern Oakland.
A Mid-Day Celebration at STAK Space

We couldn’t be more excited to gather and share a meal right here at our very own STAK Space location on the 18th floor of 1950 Franklin. On Wednesday, February 11th, we’re hosting a Black History Month Lunch from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. We believe that some of the best connections happen over a shared plate, so we’ve put together a casual afternoon featuring a spread of vibrant African cuisine and festive decorations. It’s a thoughtful invitation to step away from the desk and enjoy the flavors and spirit of the community. Whether you’re a long-time member or a neighbor dropping in, it’s a space to simply enjoy good food and great company in a warm, relaxed atmosphere.
Preserving the Narrative: Storytelling at AAMLO
On February 14th, the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO) offers a deep dive into Black Liberation and storytelling through specialized photography and videography workshops. This session is crucial for those who believe that the lens is a tool for justice. By teaching the technical and ethical sides of archival work, AAMLO ensures that the present-day struggles and triumphs of Oakland’s Black community are documented with the same care as the history of the Black Panthers or the Pullman Porters. It is a day for creators to learn how to turn their current projects into lasting historical records.
The Grand Finale: Black Joy Parade
The month reaches a crescendo with the legendary Black Joy Parade on Sunday, February 22nd. This “hyper-positive” celebration takes over Downtown Oakland, starting at 14th and Broadway. It is a massive, living archive of resilience, featuring hundreds of vendors, live performances, and the unmistakable energy that makes Oakland a global icon. The parade is a reminder that joy itself is a powerful form of resistance. As we move through 2026, participating in these events allows us to honor the pioneers who built this city while supporting the creators and entrepreneurs who are defining its next chapter.
